Union deals Cercle a bitter defeat after the break

Cercle hosted Union on the tenth matchday of the Jupiler Pro League, and while Cercle had the upper hand in the first half, we would eventually lose 0-3 with goals coming after the break from Dante Vanzeir (2x) and Lapoussin.

Yves Vanderhaeghe opted for Popovic instead of Miangue at the back, and Hotic and Matondo started ahead of Millàn and Vanhoutte. The game got off to a slow start, partly due to heavy rain. The first chance fell for Cercle, via Matondo. The Welshman came was one on one with Moris after a clever pass from Denkey, but he narrowly missed the target.

Just before 15 minutes, Union would respond. Kandouss stormed into the penalty area from the left to get on to Undav's pass, but Didillon saved the Groen-Zwart with a fine stop with his leg. Just before the 20th minute, it would be Cercle that took matters into their own hands. Denkey released Hotic, but overhit his shot and the ball flashed wide. The last chance of the first half came on a free kick by Union midfielder Teuma. The ball crashed against the crossbar, though, offering Cercle a warning as the half came to a close.

Union manager Mazzu was clearly than less satisfied with his team. He started the second half with two changes as Lynen and Van der Heyden replaced Marcq and Bager. Early in the second half, Union top scorer Undav had an excellent chance to score the opening goal, but he skewed his effort wildly wide. It was his fellow striker, Vanzeir who scored the opening goal ten minutes later. Undav did well to turn the back line and beat Utkus before slipping the ball to Vanzeir, who turned Didillon to make it 1-0.

Cercle reacted with a lot of pressure from the front, but Union made the most of their chances, adding more goals ten minutes before time. Again Undav found Vanzeir and he made it 0-2 from close range. Five minutes from time, Union made the final score a little harder on Cercle. On as a substitute, Mitoma dribbled through the Cercle defense and found Lapoussin, who was unmarked and blasted home the 0-3. Union thus left Bruges with 3 points and top spot in the standings. For Cercle, the result was a worrying one.

Cercle: Didillon, Vitinho, Daland (Van der Bruggen 74'), Popovic (Millàn 81'), Utkus, Denkey, Hotic (Deman 65'), Matondo (Waldo 65'), Da Silva Lopes, Corryn and Kanouté (Vanhoutte 74').

Union: Moris, Nieuwkoop, Bager (Lynen, 46' Amani 58'), Nielsen, Undav (Avenatti), Vanzeir (Mitoma 83'), Burgess, Teuma, Marcq (Van der Heyden 46'), Kandouss and Lapoussin.

A valiant Groen-Zwart fall in Oostende

On the 11th match day of the Jupiler Pro League, Cercle were second bottom before heading to the coast to take on Oostende. Groen-Zwart played a dogged match and took the lead through Somers. KVO were on the ropes, but 2 moments turned the result, as Gueye and Amade sealed the points at home for the Kustboys.

Yves Vanderhaeghe had made some striking changes to his team. Sousa was given his debut at the back. The Brazilian defender was finally free from injury and was given the start over Popovic. In attack, the duo of Millàn and Somers were tasked to score goals and in midfield Van der Bruggen replaced the injured Kanouté.

Cercle got off to a good start and played well against the tenth-placed side in the Jupiler Pro League. The high pressure from Groen-Zwart, under the impulse of the hard-working Somers, tested the Oostende defence. Real chances had to wait until the 20th minute, though, as Utkus was able to play out from the back, finding Vanhoutte who had the 0-1 at hand, but came up short against Fortes.
