Cercle beat Twente in a friendly, 0-1!
In a friendly match against the Dutch first division side FC Twente, Cercle won 0-1 on Thursday afternoon; Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao scored for Cercle in the second half.
After training on Wednesday morning, Cercle headed to Enschede in the afternoon. For the home team, coach Ron Jans and midfielder Michel Vlap have their own history in Belgium. Jans was a coach at Standard in 2012 and Vlap is on loan from Anderlecht this season. For coach Yves Vanderhaeghe, the match against Twente was also his first match with assistants Miron Muslic and Jimmy De Wulf at his side. Didillon and Matondo did not travel with Cercle to the Netherlands, as the former was rested and Matondo had suffered a minor concussion since the game against Union.
It was time to play football on a beautiful pitch at the Grolsch Veste, the home of FC Twente. In an intense opening stretch of play, it was the lightning-fast Misidjan who quickly spring the offside trap and opportunistically took his chance, but could only hit the the side netting. The Groen-Zwart would react with an effort by Kanouté which went over. Moments later, Sousa got forward and released Waldo with a long ball, but the Spanish winger couldn't quite reach the ball.
Cercle's defensive organization was excellent indeed; the Groen-Zwart played composed football and the greatest opportunities also came their way. After a recovery by Somers, he was able to launch Waldo with a long ball. Just as Rubio was about to shoot, he was knocked off balance by a Twente defender and his shot went wide. The greatest chance would come moments later for Somers, but he could only hit the bar from close range. Play continued to surge up and down the pitch in what was a pleasant first half. Cercle clearly also had an affinity for the crossbar, because Sousa would also hit the crossbar with a header. All in all, though, it was a quiet afternoon for Warleson, who barely had to make save. Even though Cercle had always had the upper hand, the teams went into halftime level, 0-0.
Cercle made six changes at the start of the second half and the Groen-Zwart immediately took the initiative again. However, Waldo's shot was easily claimed by the goalkeeper. At times the match also took on a physical character, as Oosterwolde was hopelessly late twice on tackles on Vitinho and Hotic, but Cercle did not let themselves be threatened.
The well-deserved goal for Cercle finally came: a short corner from Vitinho fell to Hotic, who delivered a cross into the area. The ball stayed in front of the goal and in the end it was the substitute Raux-Yao who, literally having just come on the field, found the opener. There was no reaction from Twente, and Cercle went looking for another goal. Waldo was able to push through on the left and send the ball toward goal, but no one could reach it. A free kick by Vitinho found Popovic's head moments later, but the Serb's header went narrowly wide. In the final phase of the match, Twente broke through with Oosterwolde, but his attempt also hit the crossbar.
